'Thousand-year' Colorado floods reignite climate debate: join The Weather Company’s conversation

NEW YORK: As the devastating flash floods in Colorado reignite the climate debate in America, just one year after Hurricane Sandy hit New York, join The Weather Company for an essential day-long climate science conversation as part of Climate Week NYC


Earlier in September, following a summer of extreme drought which caused wildfires and massive agricultural damage, Colorado experienced a week of such heavy rain that there was flash flooding in 18 different cities across the state, costing an estimated US$1 billion worth of damage and the loss of 8 human lives.

As more erratic and extreme weather such as the record rainfall in Colorado becomes the norm, the climate science conversation is again climbing the public agenda across the globe. Tackling the issue head on, next week The Weather Company will host a full day of climate science discussion during Climate Week NYC with leaders in research, film, government and business, to share the critical global climate conversation with America.


On September 26, in partnership with The Climate Group and as part of Climate Week NYCThe Weather Company will convene top researchers, NGOs, CEOs and more in the City, for one-on-one interviews, short talks and panel discussions, including remarks by guest speaker NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as part of a crucial day-long Climate Conversation focused on reducing the social and economic impacts of climate change.

To kick-off The Weather Company’s program of events, there will be a series of short talks from leading researchers on the latest discoveries and data impacting the three key ecological spheres–wildfire and drought, melting icecaps and smut spores in the air–and what it for our weather. This will be followed by a panel with representatives from influential NGOs advocating climate action, who will explore ways to mobilize the American public on such important issues.

The afternoon boasts a sneak-preview of an new documentary series by Showtime, followed by an audience Q&A with its producers and stars. Finally there will be a panel with entrepreneurs and policymakers on using clean technologies to lower greenhouse gas emissions and curb climate change.
